Scottish football is going back to the future with the return of the official SPFL Tennent’s Sixes.

It was an iconic six-a-side tournament in the 1980s and ‘90s – with Celtic winning the tournament in 1992 – and it’s returning to the Braehead Arena on the weekend of October 3 and 4 – with the official backing of the SPFL.

All 12 Premiership teams have signed up to take part in a legends version of the small-sided tournament, with heroes of the recent past wearing the official club kits of this season and among the former Celts joining up the Hoops’ squad are Simon Donnelly and Jonny Hayes.

Celtic 1993-99, 195 games, 41 goals

From Celtic player to CelticPlayer, former Celt Simon Donnelly’s thoughts and wisdom can be heard regularly as part of the club’s commentary team when the Hoops matches are broadcast online throughout the world. And it was being pulled from a youth trip to the other side of the world that gave the striker the chances to make his first-team debut at Celtic. He was all set to travel to Dallas, Texas for a youth tournament in 1994 when he was told to unpack his bags and stay here as he was making his debut against Hibernian. His first goal followed soon after against Raith Rovers and he was a genuine first-team player by the time his youth team-mates returned from Texas. Donnelly had joined the Hoops from Queen’s Park and, in 1999, he and fellow Celt, Phil O’Donnell moved down to Sheffield Wednesday where they became known as the ‘O’Donnelly Brothers’. In 2003 the striker was back up north, this time with St Johnstone, then Dunfermline Athletic before a prolific spell at Partick Thistle opened up a new door. At Firhill, then Dundee United and York City he coached under former Celtic team-mate, Jackie McNamara, and then Mark Wilson at Brechin City. He is forever connected with Celtic, though, helping the Hoops to all three domestic trophies in his time here.
