Scottish football is going back to the future with the return of the official SPFL Tennent’s Sixes.

It was an iconic six-a-side tournament in the 1980s and ‘90s – with Celtic winning the tournament in 1992 – and it’s returning to the Braehead Arena on the weekend of October 3 and 4 – with the official backing of the SPFL.

All 12 Premiership teams have signed up to take part in a legends version of the small-sided tournament, with heroes of the recent past wearing the official club kits of this season and among the former Celts joining up the Hoops’ squad are Charlie Mulgrew and Barry John Corr.

Celtic 1999-06 and 2010-16, 2008 games, 29 goals

The Scotland internationalist who amassed 44 caps came through the youth ranks at Celtic before going out on loan to Dundee United then signing for Wolves in 2006. After two years at Wolverhampton, that included a loan spell at Southend United, Charlie Mulgrew was back north of the border in 2008 to join Aberdeen, but after two years at Pittodrie he was back at his first love and wearing the Hoops once more. Over the next six years he helped the Hoops win five successive titles, the first five of nine-in-a-row for the club, and two Scottish Cups, scoring the third in the 2010/11 3-0 final win over Motherwell and he also played in the 2012/13 3-0 win over Hibernian. Come 2016, Mulgrew was back down south, this time with Blackburn Rovers with a couple of loan spells at Wigan Athletic and Fleetwood Town over five years before having another two seasons back at Dundee United prior to a short stay at Doncaster City. Mulgrew will forever be remembered for scoring the equaliser as the Hoops came back from 3-0 down at Kilmarnock in October, 2011 in a game that turned Celtic’s season around – he also scored twice in the 6-0 win at the same venue that clinched the title later that season, the first of that nine-in-a-row.
