It was 60 years ago today, on Saturday, October 29, that Celtic retained the League Cup, beating Rangers 1-0 in the final at Hampden in what would be the first of five trophies the club would win in that historic 1966/67 season.

Celtic had comprehensively won their group section in the early stages of the tournament, winning all six games against Hearts, Clyde and St Mirren respectively, scoring 23 goals and conceding just six.

That set up a two-leg quarter-final against Dunfermline Athletic, with the Hoops winning 4-1 at home and then following that up with a 3-1 victory at East End Park.

And a 2-0 win over Airdrie in the semi-final, courtesy of goals from Bobby Murdoch and Joe McBride, put Jock Stein’s side in the final, where they would face their city rivals.

The previous season, two John Hughes penalties gave Celtic a 2-1 victory over Rangers in the final, and it was another victory for the Hoops in 1966 in front of a crowd of just under 95,000.

What proved to be the only goal of the game came after just 19 minutes when Bobby Lennox fired the ball home after Joe McBride had nodded it into his path.

Stein’s side were forced to defend resolutely for large periods of the final, but they did so successfully, maintaining that 1-0 lead until the final whistle, which heralded the start of a special season of silverware for Celtic.

The final also saw Stevie Chalmers replace the injured John Hughes during the game, thus becoming the first ever substitute in a cup final in Scotland.

Writing in the Celtic View the following week, Jock Stein said: 'Much has been written and said about the manner in which we won and the manner in which Rangers lost. There have been complaints from this quarter and that.

'We accept merely this fact - that we took one of the scoring chances we made and Rangers took none of theirs...

'As was the case when we won the trophy last year, some folk seemed to be much more concerned with explaining how Rangers lost than with telling how Celtic won. One writer even went so far as to say that Rangers played all the best football and lost!

'The best bit of football in the game was that which led to the only goal and to the fact that the record books say that Celtic won the League Cup.'
