The second-half started livelier for both sides as they searched for the opening goal, and it was James Forrest who had Celtic’s best chance in the early stages with a left-foot shot from just outside the area that was well-saved.

But on 52 minutes, Besiktas were awarded a penalty after Jordan Lotomba fouled Ernest Poku inside the area.

Junior Olaitan fired in the spot-kick that was well-saved by Sam Johnstone, but as the ball spun up into the area, Olaitan was first to it and tapped it into the net to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Martin O’ Neill made a triple change on the hour mark and it had an immediate effect. When the game re-started, Callum McGregor capitalised on a slack pass to set up Callum Osmand, and with his first touch, the young Celt drilled a low shot from 20 yards into the back of the Besiktas net to make it 1-1.

The goal gave the team and the fans a lift, although the Turkish side almost restored their lead within a couple of minutes with a sift counter-attack, though the final effort from inside the area went high and wide.

On 66 minutes, Liam Scales came close to giving Celtic the lead when he connected with a Benjamin Nygren corner, but his effort was tipped over the bar by the Besiktas goalkeeper.

And Celtic came close again with 15 minutes remaining. The lively Osmand latched on to a cross-field pass from Colby Donovan and threaded a ball through to Nygren who turned on to his right foot and fired a shot just over the bar from the edge of the area.

The manager made two more changes, with Kasper Hogh and Cameron Carter-Vickers coming off. It meant Camilo Duran was put through the middle, and within a couple of minutes, the Colombian had put Celtic ahead.

Once again, Callum Osmand was involved, sliding a ball through for Duran, who glided past the Besiktas keeper and slotted the ball into the net to make it 2-1 to Celtic.

Haissem Hassan came close to extending Celtic’s lead with a powerful left-foot shot which the keeper saved at his near post. Callum Osmand then had the ball in the net, dinking it over the keeper after Camilo Duran’s initial effort was ruled out for offside, but it was ruled out for offside.

However, with five minutes remaining, Besiktas equalised when their captain, Orkun Kokcu unleashed a powerful shot from 30 yards out which flashed into the Celtic net.

Parity lasted barely 60 seconds before Camilo Duran scored his second and Celtic’s third of the net, latching on to a Kieran Tierney shot and guiding the ball home from eight yards out.

It was a remarkable second-half and a thrilling Europa League victory for Maritn O’Neill’s side.
