HIBERNIAN…0

CELTIC…1

(Clark 14)

Celtic FC Women returned to winning ways of Wednesday evening, defeating Hibernian 1-0 at Meadowbank Stadium.

Kelly Clark’s first-half finish was enough to separate the side’s as the Hoops took away all three points from the capital.

Following Sunday’s Sky Sports Cup defeat, the Ghirls quickly had the chance to bounce back as they travelled to face Hibs.

Wednesday’s night’s match gave the Hoops that quick opportunity as they travelled through to the capital for their re-arranged fixture, following the matches postponement.

Grant Scott named six changes to his side, with Claire Walsh, Casey Howe, Shannon McGregor, Morgan Cross and Chloe Arthur all coming in from the start.

The match marked Morgan Cross’ first start since the Scottish Cup final, and the winger was proving tricky for Hibs to deal with.

Starting down the right hand side, Cross’ pace caused all sorts of problems for the Hibernian backline.

In the early stages, the Hoops did have to withstand some moments of pressure, with Adelaide Gay pulling off some smart stops.

One key component in the Ghirls’ performance was their ability to throw themselves in front of any danger, doing well to block any Hibs efforts going goal bound.

The first real opening for Celtic came through Cross, who latched onto Casey Howe’s lofted ball over the top.

The winger broke free of her marker, getting a shot off on goal, which was well saved by the Hibs goalkeeper.

But it was from that set piece that the opening goal of the game would come as Kelly Clark opened the scoring.

After the ball was worked short from the set play, Casey Howe whipped a dangerous low cross into the box.

It was met by Kelly Clark in the centre of the area, who produced a sensational back-heeled finish, which found the back of the net to put Celtic one in front.

Moments after opening the scoring, the Celts came close to doubling the advantage through Cross.

After latching onto another ball in behind the Hibs defence, she looked to tap the ball round the goalkeeper.

As it appeared to be heading for the net, the Hibernian backline did well to recover, clearing off the line before the Hoops had a second.

Hannah Jordan also tried her luck with an effort from distance, which was well held by the Hibs goalkeeper.

Heading into the second half, the Celts would have been looking to stretch their advantage after taking the lead early in the match.

Grant Scott made changes on the hour mark, introducing Lisa Robertson and Izzy Fisher to proceedings, and the latter came closest to doubling the score.

Following a driving run down the left, the striker unleashed an effort on goal, which came off the upright, before being cleared away to safety.

The home side did come out and try produce a response of their own, but once again, the Hoops were putting their bodies on the line to block any effort.

Adelaide Gay was also forced into a smart stop from a Libby Smith effort, claiming the ball and keeping her clean sheet intact.

Ultimately, Kelly Clark’s first half goal was enough to seal the three points for the Hoops, who returned to winning ways.

It was a welcomed boost for the Ghirls, who showcased great fighting spirit to take the win away from the capital.
