Celtic FC B suffered defeat on matchday three of the UEFA Youth League as Atletico Madrid ran out 2-0 winners at The City Stadium.

Following a competitive outing between the two sides, late goals in either half proved crucial and the Spanish side took home all three points from their visit to Glasgow.

In what seems to have been the story of the young Hoops’ European campaign, the Bhoys showed they can compete for large spells of the game.

However, it ultimately ended in defeat for the Celts as we reached the half way point in the UEFA Youth League.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the match, B Team coach Stephen McManus admitted there were aspects of the performance he was pleased with, which carried over from the 1-1 draw against Lazio. However, his side will be left disappointed with the end result.

He said: “The first half was okay. There were a couple of good moments in the first 45 minutes, but we were a little bit disappointed to lose the goal in the manner that we did.

“It’s a set play, and we have got good height and aggression in the team. But we don’t deal with the first ball, which is disappointing.

“And then that puts you on the back foot. We have a good chance at the start of the second half. But we didn’t really lay a glove on Atletico.

“With the way that we wanted, we never really put them under pressure or we didn’t penetrate at the top end of the pitch enough.

“We didn’t work the ball quickly enough to get into the middle third, and then into the final third.

'Our shape overall was good. We worked on a couple of things defensively, which was good to carry over from the Lazio game. That was a positive.'

“But again, in moments like this, similar to the Feyenoord game, the players and ourselves as the staff will have a few regrets after the game because the boys never really had a proper go in the second half which is disappointing.”

Although the Hoops suffered a narrow defeat, as is always the case at this level of football, there will be plenty for the young Celtic players to take from Wednesday’s match-up.
