Three years of operations and rehabilitation followed as Kennedy miraculously fought back and pulled on the Hoops of Celtic once again.

His return to the team came in April 2007 as he started away to Kilmarnock on the day that Celtic won the league title thanks to Shunsuke Nakamura’s 90th-minute winner.

Speaking about his fightback, he said: “All you can think of in that time is that you’re done and you’ll never play for Celtic again.

“You don’t know what you’re going to do and your whole family are in on it with you and are taking it as bad if not worse than yourself.

“I had a period for a month where my head was scrambled and I was unclear what I was going to do.

“Something clicked when I was given a bit of hope and it was three years between playing games with several setbacks along the way but we eventually got there.

'I had to wait for my opportunity and it so happened that was the game and it was a bit of a fairy tale in that respect.'

“We managed to win the league and that will live with me for the rest of my days.

“After the game, Gordon tried to single me out but I felt a bit embarrassed by it because I’m not that type of guy.

“It was a great day and for your family and friends they probably thought I wouldn’t play again but I managed to get back out there.”
