Celtic recently wrapped up their 21^st League Cup win with a 2-1 victory over Rangers at Hampden – their seventh win in the tournament since season 2014/15.

You have to go back 14 years ago, though, to this very day in 2009 for Celtic’s 14^th League Cup win and, as luck would have it, it was also against the Ibrox side.

Not only did both goals in the 2-0 win come from Celtic Academy graduates, they also came from players who were as comfortable in the green and white of Ireland as they were in the green and white of Celtic.

The team that took the field at Hampden on March 15, 2009 was: Boruc; Hinkel, Loovens, McManus, O’Dea (Wilson 106); Hartley (Samaras 72, Vennegoor of Hesselink 120), S Brown, Caldwell, Nakamura; McGeady, McDonald. Subs: M Brown, Crosas.

As is usually the case in such scenarios, it was tense, it was dramatic and it wasn’t for the faint-hearted – plus the tension only multiplied when the whistle blew at the end of a chance-filled, but, ultimately, goal-less 90 minutes.

The extra-time period had hardly started, though, when Japanese star, Shunsuke Nakamura sent in a trademark free-kick that was headed in by current B team coach, Darren O’Dea.

You would think that scoring in the first minute of extra-time would settle the nerves, but it wasn’t until the final minute of the 120 that Aiden McGeady was hauled down in the box.

The winger got up, took the spot-kick himself and sent Allan McGregor the wrong way to finish the scoreline at 2-0 and send the Celtic End into bedlam.
