Celtic FC Women manager Fran Alonso was left delighted by his players’ response as they bounced back from the previous weekend’s loss to defeat Hibernian 2-0 on Sunday.

First-half goals from Amy Gallacher and Caitlin Hayes secured all three points for the Hoops in the capital.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the match, Fran Alonso was pleased with his squad’s professional performance in what could have proved to be a tricky game at Meadowbank Stadium.

He said: “It was a very professional performance. Both goals obviously come from set-plays, but I think at times we were very good going forward.

“Hibs are a very difficult team to play against. They are much more solid at the back now, and dangerous on the counter.

“But I thought we controlled the game quite well. They had a couple of chances in the first half, but I felt like we were comfortable.

‘We didn’t create as much as we normally do, but the most important thing was the three points, and a clean sheet.’

“We were away from home and there was a lot of wind, so I’m delighted with the performance and the three points.

“We’ve finished the regular season before the split with an outstanding record, which I am very happy about.”

After suffering a disappointing defeat to Glasgow City in the previous game, the Hoops quickly had the chance to bounce back against Hibs.

The Spaniard was aware that result could have made the visit to take on Hibs an even tougher task. However, his players produced the perfect response to pick up another important three points.

“This could have been a very difficult game, because some players might lack confidence after the last result,” he said.

“But we spoke about it during the week, and I thought we deserved more from that game. We were good last week, potentially better than we were today.

“You might fall, but it’s all about getting back up and I think the girls stood up today. It was a very professional performance.

“We were very good from set plays once again. Three points, and another clean sheet. So I’m delighted and it’s a very good way for us to make up for last week.”

Next week, the Celts have a break from league action before the post-split fixtures kick off as they take on Hearts in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.

With a place in the semi-finals at Hampden up for grabs, it is bound to be an exciting fixture for Fran Alonso and his squad.

After comfortably taking care of Hibs, the Celts can now look forward and prepare for Sunday’s fixture at the Oriam.

He said: “We obviously weren’t thinking about that game, before having to play Hibs away, which is a very hard game.

“Last year we dropped two points in this exact game, after Hibs equalised in the last minute. They are a very competitive team with a lot of experience.

“So it was very important to focus on this game, but now it’s all about trying to get into the Scottish Cup semi-final, which would be a dream to play at Hampden.

“To do that, we have to beat one of the big surprises this season. They are a very good team, and are in fourth at the moment.

“Last time, we beat them 2-1 and we struggled. We know it’s going to be a hard game, but we are looking forward to facing them next Sunday and hopefully achieve our dream getting into the semi-final of the cup.”
