This season, the young Celts have played some fantastic attacking football, scoring 86 goals in the league, and that was no different at Central Park.

Both Dawson and Brooks showed brilliant striking instinct and determination to get their goals, and O’Dea lauded his forwards for getting in the right areas.

“The first goal is a run in behind, which Tsoanelo Letsosa runs in behind and then Joey Dawson shows good instincts and desire to slid in to score," he said.

“The second one is a typical Celtic goal, if you like. Magnus Mackenzie crossed it along the ground, and the opposite winger is in between the sticks where they are meant to be, but they aren’t always – so Adam Brooks gets his rewards.

'That is what they need to understand - they might make that run four, five or six times, but it’s the seventh time when you don’t make that run, the ball comes.'

“They need to keep doing that over, and over again. As we saw, it got us the rewards for doing it.”

It might have been the forward players who were getting on the scoresheet, but as a former defender, the B team coach knows just how big a role each players has to play for Celtic.

The surface in Cowdenbeath could have made it a very difficult afternoon for the Hoops to play their football. However, the young squad stuck to their principles and were rewarded for that. O’Dea admitted he was delighted to see how his players dealt with that challenge.

“We played some really good stuff," he said. "Our defenders were brilliant and they had to defend a lot of direct stuff. They dealt with the physical side of the game, but then showed the bravery and the courage to actually play.

“They are the players who will feel the most risk on the pitch anyway, and especially on that surface. That includes the goalkeeper, Josh Clarke.

“It shows real courage to do what they did, and give us that chance in the game because naturally we are not a team that can just go direct and play forward too early.

“It takes our centre-backs, full-backs and goalkeeper to be able to play out and allow us to get a hold of the game. I was really pleased with them, and thought every one of them to a man was excellent.”
