Liam Scales was born just 40 minutes away from the Aviva Stadium, but having studied in Dublin and started his footballing career in the city, the trip to face Wolves was certainly a homecoming for the defender.

Knowing more than most what the support levels are like for Celtic in Ireland and in Dublin, he wasn’t shocked to see such a big turnout for the 1-1 draw against the English Premier League side.

Playing the full 90 minutes and impressing at the heart of the defence, Scales was pleased that he and the team could put on a strong performance for the 30,000 in attendance.

Speaking to Celtic TV, he said: “There’s a massive connection there so it was great and to play 90 minutes and put in a good performance as a team was nice.

“The atmosphere was great with a lot of Celtic fans travelling from Glasgow, and the Irish fans always bring a voice so it was nice.

“I saw my mum and dad yesterday in the hotel and met up with family. I had a few people that I had to refuse tickets because I couldn’t get enough but it’s great to be back and I enjoyed that.

“We came in on the bus and the streets were full and people were having a good laugh and I got a good feeling come in from that.

‘It just shows you that there’s a massive following here and it’s massive for the Irish fans to come here on their doorstep and come to a Celtic game.’

“For a lot of young kids, it might be their first chance to watch Celtic play and we put on a good performance for them.”

Going a goal up inside six minutes, Celtic enjoyed large spells of control in the game and were unfortunate not to score more having hit the bar on two occasions.
