“Their fitness levels are already quite high and they are halfway through their season.

“From a structural point of view they have good cohesion and it was tough going but it will really help us going into the season.

“Regardless of both teams having a lot of chances we were very solid defensively and put our body on the line even in a pre-season game.”

What was also important with the trip to Japan was getting the chance to connect with the supporters in the Far East, some of those fans being new to the club following the success of our five players from the country.

Witnessing the support here has been an eye-opener for O’Riley, although he’s hardly surprised, and he enjoyed seeing the love for the Bhoys from Japan.

He added: “It’s really cool. Even before the first game we were on our team walk along the river and there was a ferry full of Celtic fans singing and you’re shocked to see it but at the same time I’m not.”

On the support for the five Japanese players: “It’s really cool that we get this amount of fans worldwide and you can’t underestimate the size of our club and it really shows, especially on the other side of the world.

'They’re already excited to be here. Usually, a lot of the team are considered idols to a lot of fans but we’re pretty irrelevant here.'

“Every fan is in awe, whereas we are like tourists in a sense. I’m enjoying them having the limelight and we’ve got to take it in.”

Returning back to Glasgow in the coming days, the trip also brings an end to the few weeks of training in Europe and Asia, with two more games coming up in Dublin and Glasgow.

With two weeks left until the season starts against Ross County, the Denmark Under-21 international feels that it’s been a really positive summer under the new manager.

“I feel really good and we’re in a better place than we were in the last game," he said. "The scoreline in the last game is one we didn’t want but it’s still early in pre-season.

“I’m very lucky to have had very good managers in a short space of time at a young age.

“The gaffer here is especially good at communicating and getting his point across in a concise way. For all of us, that makes it easier to transition onto the pitch.

“Being able to have this relationship where you can speak to him and learn new things constantly in an open environment is very enjoyable.”
