It will be a different prospect, though, with fresh opposition who have nothing to lose and the Celts have the chance to come up against non-Premiership opponents for a change.

The manager said: “In cup competitions in general, even though you may play the same opposition, with us playing Kilmarnock in the league and the cup, there’s always a bit of an edge in cup games.

“You know that the result is everything, obviously you want to perform well and you want to play your football that has got you to that stage. Ultimately cup football is about the result, that’s all that matters at the end.

“So by the time they come around, you realise it’s going to be a different experience, a different environment and irrespective of your opponents, that’s the first thing.

“And I think the players, they realise that there’s always a different edge to game where you know the consequences are a lot more stark than a league game, so we’re looking forward to it, particularly at home.

“We haven’t had too many home cup fixtures since I’ve been here, so it’s good to have one at home where we can hopefully put on a strong performance.”

Although the Greenock side will come here with nothing to lose, they know they will still have to shut up shop at the back to have any chance of causing a shock, and that is something Celtic have repeatedly encountered not just in cup football.

The Aussie said: “For the most part it’s what we have to counter, particularly here at Celtic Park, and they’re going to come here looking to hopefully create an upset, and to do that I think they know they’re going to have to fire hard and defend against us .

“We’ve just got to be ready for whatever happens out there. From our perspective, the key is to focus on the key fundamentals of our game and make sure that we dominate in the areas we want to – particularly at Celtic Park.

“We know that with our football, if we are aggressive from the first minute, we are difficult to stop.”
