An evident strength of Fran Alonso’s Celtic side has been set-pieces, with a number of crucial goals coming from that avenue during big games.

That was the case once again this afternoon (Sunday) as the Celts ran out 9-0 winners over Dundee United at the Excelsior Stadium.

However, the opening game of the game came in a slightly different fashion from a set-piece, with Maria McAneny scoring directly from a corner to give the Ghirls a 1-0 lead.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the match, the Celtic youngster was pleased to play her part in another terrific victory in front of the home supporters.

She said: “I thought the girls were excellent today. There was a few changes in the squad from Wednesday night, me included.

'So it’s great to know we’ve got that we have got that depth. It doesn’t matter what team we put out there, everyone will put in a performance. Everyone is buzzing with another top result.'

It was McAneny's first goal of the campaign, and she was delighted to see the ball end up in the back of the net, even if that wasn’t her initial target.

“I’d say it’s probably one of the things I am good at,” she explained. “I know that I just need to put it in the box, and see what happens I guess!

“To be fair, I was probably aiming for Caitlin Hayes, but sometimes they just go your way, and it went in.

"But with an early goal, we just know that we keep going and you see that today, we scored another eight goals, so it was a positive day all round.”

So far this campaign, McAneny has been involved in each of the Hoops’ four victories, from the start and off the bench.

During the last two home matches against Dundee United and Hamilton Accies, McAneny has played a slightly different role as part of the defensive line.

Despite the fact she is playing at the back, the Academy graduate is still given licence to go forward, and so far she has enjoyed her new role in the side.

Following another emphatic victory in the fourth game of the new season, McAneny is looking forward to continue learning new roles in the side, with some important matches to come in the next few weeks.

She said: “Playing in that position is a lot different. I’ve enjoyed it so far. Games like today and last week, I am still able to attack, but also doing that defensive side.

'But I’m happy. It’s something different, but you are still learning. I am learning with the best people around and the best coaches.'

“We have got one more game, and then it’s on to the Champions League,” McAneny continued.

“So it’s about keeping that going and then hopefully we can go do well in Europe as well.”
