Speaking ahead of the game, the Celtic captain said: “We had a great relationship the last time and spoke a lot, so it’s pretty much been the same.

“There’s now a bit more responsibility on me to carry his message on to the pitch and to try and coach the team from within the game situation.

“We will have close chats about what he’s asking me to do to help the team. You can have one conversation with him and you can see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice.

“As football people, you always want to bring success. When you push the start button then your automatic drive kicks in and you want to be the best, and you get that feeling when you speak to him.

'The more of those characters you have in your building then it gives you more chance of success.'

“Within the structure of the team, he will always have little details where he will look to improve everyone. I’m certainly not immune to that and I’m keen to learn.

“We’re a willing bunch to learn and we’re trying to absorb all the information he’s got.”

Heading into the league opener against Ross County on Saturday, Flag Day will give everyone the first opportunity to see what this Brendan Rodgers team will look like in competitive action.

McGregor says while there may be slight tweaks this time around under the manager, the philosophy will remain the same, and the Celtic fans can continue to look forward to more aggressive, attacking football.

He added: “The work has been good in pre-season. We’ve looked at a couple of different ways of playing.

“The last time the manager was here, the team was fairly flexible in terms of transitioning from one system to another, even within games.

'He’s trying to bring that learning to this group as well and it will be fast, attacking football, so the principles will be the same.'

“He’s been away for four years so naturally people and coaches evolve and there’s always new ideas and you continue to learn.

“His principles remain the same and you’ll see an attacking team, and as we go, the idea will probably evolve throughout the season to be adaptable.

“He’s a top manager and he likes to work really closely with players. He gets under your skin and really understands the players and what pushes you and motivates you.

“His level of detail and understanding of the game will benefit everyone. The hope is that everyone will improve and continue to improve.”
