The 2007/08 title race had all the drama of a Shakespeare production, mixed with as many twists and turns as an Alton Towers’ rollercoaster.

As good a wordsmith as Shakespeare was and as thrilling as the upside-down Nemesis may be, neither could have put together a storyline as compelling and a ride as thrilling to what the SPL conjured up that campaign.

Where the exhilarating feeling in a ride comes from the descent down, Celtic’s rise up the table towards the end of the campaign was what gripped us all.

A 1-0 defeat at home to Motherwell in April left Gordon Strachan’s side six points behind leaders Rangers, having played two more games and with only seven left to play - the inscriber may as well have started putting the letters R.A.N… into the league’s metallic base.

Yet, with two derby games still to come at Celtic Park in quick succession, Celtic rose from the ashes, all elbows and full of fight, beating Rangers twice in two dramatic games before lifting one of the most emotional titles in club history.

15 years to the day from the second of those derby wins - a 3-2 victory on April 27, 2008 - double goal-scorer Scott McDonald reflected on his memories of those final seven games and his role in that title charge.

Speaking to the Celtic View Podcast, he said: “There was a lot of chaos around that Motherwell game. They were down to 10 men and we still couldn’t find the equaliser.

“The manager was really good at calming situations to make sure that in-house everyone was confident.

“What helped was that we had an international break after that game, so we had two weeks before the next.

“I remember it vividly because I went to Rome with my now wife, where we visited the Vatican, and there may have been a couple of little prayers in there.

'We had seven games left, we were so far behind, but it was one game at a time and we knew if we could keep chipping away and win those other games then we still had Rangers to play twice.'

The first derby came under the floodlights at Celtic Park on April 16. Draw and the title was out of sight. Win and it was game on.

As the clock hit 90 minutes the league was gone, as Shunsuke Nakamura’s wonder goal was cancelled out by a Rangers equaliser before McDonald himself missed a crucial second-half penalty.

But there was one final twist when McDonald set up Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink in injury time to earn the three points and keep the title race alive.

“Winning that first game 2-1 with such dramatic scenes at the end with the last kick of the game was incredible,” remembers McDonald.

“We knew our season was at play and we knew Rangers probably just needed a draw and they would be home and hosed.

“The ball came to the back stick and I managed to get it in for Jan to score which was a wonderful feeling, even more so because I had missed a penalty which was horrific for about five minutes and I didn’t know where I was and I thought I had lost it.'

“Barry Robson laid the foundations in the first minute with a tackle on Christian Dailly which made everyone wake up and think, ‘We need to get into them’.

“The fans became electric in that moment and one little thing can change everything and that was a pivotal moment.”
