Celtic's progress to the semi-final of the 1969/70 European Cup had seen the Hoops beat FC Basel, Benfica (beating the Portuguese side on the toss of a coin after the tie finished 3-3) and Fiorentina.

That set up a classic 'Battle of Britain' clash with Leeds United in the last four, with Jock Stein's side looking to reach their second European Cup final in three years.

They faced a Leeds side managed by Don Revie and heralded by the English media as an unstoppable force, destined to reach the final in Milan.

The first leg on April 1, 1970 took place at a packed Elland Road. Leeds wore their all-white kit while Celtic were in the Hoops, although they had to wear red socks borrowed from the home side as the West German referee, Gerhard Schulenburg, did not want both teams in white socks.

And it took Stein's side just 40 seconds to open the scoring - the first goal Leeds had conceded in the competition that season - and it was George Connelly who fired home the goal. Connelly would also have a goal disallowed early in the second-half.

It was a game that displayed all of Celtic's qualities, both in terms of their football and their competitiveness, with Bobby Murdoch imperious in midfield and Jimmy Johnstone a constant tormentor of the Leeds defence.

The 1-0 win for Celtic set the Hoops up for a dramatic second-leg in Glasgow, a match that was to be played at Hampden due to the unprecedented demand for tickets. It would prove to be an unforgettable night on April 15.
