“The conditions were difficult to play in but we still played our way.

“We wanted to dominate and play quick restarts and get over the top of them and we did that, it was just unfortunate that we didn’t finish our chances.

'I think the players have enjoyed it and enjoyed walking around Sydney, seeing the sights and a few have wandered to the other side where Manly is'

“Even though it’s not a break it’s nice to mix it up a little bit.

"They’ve worked extremely hard throughout the season and now they have the chance to recharge and go for it again in the second half of the season.”

On a personal note, the trip brought back a lot of memories for the Champions League winner.

The match against Everton was played at the iconic Accor Stadium, the home of the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and also the venue Kewell played at when Australia qualified for their first World Cup in 32 years in 2006 with a dramatic victory over Uruguay.

Being back in the city was another venture down memory lane, a place he left at the age of 15 to join Leeds United and one in which he has not revisited in a number of years.

He added: “I have a lot of memories in a lot of places but this one (stadium) holds a very special place.

“In 2006 we qualified for the World Cup and it was a great night and we celebrated long into the evening.

'I was born in the city and ended up moving out west so it’s always strange, especially because of the pandemic I didn’t get a chance to come over.'

“It’s my first time back in about four or five years so it’s been great to catch up with family.

“But again, we have to fly back out, have a little break but get prepared for the second half of the season.”
