Douglas Hutchison, Director of Education, Glasgow City Council added: “I am delighted to be offer my best wishes to all the teams who will take part in this year’s Lisbon Lions tournament and my thanks to all those who have made it happen.

“We took for granted the fact that we could have tournaments like this and it was only when Covid came along we realised how much we missed them. It is great this year to return to many of the activities we enjoyed, including competitions.

“The link with the Lisbon Lions remains strong even 55 years after that famous victory when the first Scottish team lifted the European Cup. We have lost many of the Lions but their spirit and their legend lives on.

“They were a group of local men and who remain an example and inspiration to our young people of what can be achieved through hard work and commitment to your craft. Win, lose or draw, I wish all our young players the very best and hope they enjoy taking part and representing their school regardless of the outcome."

Tournament group matches will be played this week on Thursday, May 26.

Group A: John Paul Academy, Holyrood, Hillpark, Our Lady’s & St Patricks.

Group B: Bearsden, Lourdes, Hyndland, St Andrew’s.

Group C: St Matthew’s, Our Lady’s High School Motherwell, St Roch’s, St Ninian’s.

Group D: St Mungo’s, St Paul’s, Kings Park, St Peter’s.
