Speaking to Celtic TV after the game, O'Riley said: “It was nice to be back playing. There were certainly a few cobwebs I had to brush off but that’s the same for everyone.

“I’m not going to lie, it took me 10 or 15 minutes to get going in the body and then after that, I felt good.

“But it’s the first game so you can’t expect anything more. There were good bits and a lot of stuff to improve on because we were sloppy at times but it’s the first game.

'It was a perfect test and perfect for what we needed because they were a good side and it was a good atmosphere for pre-season which was nice.'

“The physicality of the game is again what we needed for going back into the Scottish league because we will expect teams to try and stop us in different ways.

“Hopefully we can build on this, get more minutes from everyone and see how we go.”

Grabbing a goal on his first appearance back was the perfect way for O’Riley to get his season underway.

Now with one game under his belt, the midfielder can’t wait to play more minutes, particularly at Celtic Park, with a friendly at home to Blackburn Rovers coming up on Saturday after a match with Banik Ostrava in the Czech Republic on Wednesday.

He added: “It’s always nice to score. Jota just gave me the ball with a simple pass and I had a lot of time on the edge of the box to pick what I wanted to do.

“There was a lot of space in the far corner and I just slotted it in, I wouldn’t say it was a worldy but it was a nice finish.”

On the band of supporters in Vienna for the game, he said: “We know what our fans are like, they come everywhere.

“I’m now really looking forward to playing at Celtic Park again because I’ve certainly missed it.”

O'Riley: I had a few cobwebs to blow off against Rapid but I feel stronger for the experience
