“Obviously here in Scotland we have exposure to artificial pitches – we’ve already had two games this year on an artificial pitch – so I don’t think there’s a great deal to be gained,” the Celtic manager said.

“If you’re expecting that, after one session, you’re going to find some miracle on an artificial pitch that you haven’t thought of which can win you the game, then I think you fall into the wrong trap.

“I’ve been involved in football for a long time where, especially at national team level but even in Australia, you have to deal with extreme climactic conditions, extreme pitch conditions.

“When I was with the national team, we were travelling from cold climates to the Middle East in literally 24 hours, from bumpy pitches to slow pitches, and what I found in the end is that the best approach is to make sure that your players always are prepared to deal with whatever challenges there are because there’s no easy solutions.

'Us flying there and having a session on their pitch is going to make absolutely zero difference. Us being here and getting a good training session from the boys and getting them prepared for a difficult game is much more important to me.'

And while the Hoops know they face a tough challenge against a side who have a strong home record, Celtic’s performances on the road in Europe this season against some top-class opposition have shown the team’s ability to create and score chances.

“We understand the challenges before us,” said the manager. “We’ve already faced them once, and they’ve faced us once so they’ll probably have a better idea of how to counteract us as well.

“But ultimately, it’s coming down to a cup game where you know the result will be decided after 90 minutes or 120 minutes, or penalties – whatever it may be – and as I said, nothing changes from our perspective.

“We’re going into the game trying to play our football the way we have every other game this year and hoping it will be enough to get the task done.”
