Now aged 37, Tajonar is enjoying the latest leg of her football journey, which has taken her from Mexico to the United States and then on to Spain before arriving in Scotland earlier this year.

And she described her lifelong love of football, which began when she was growing up in Mexico.

“As I was growing up I remember wanting to play football all the time at school and at the parties,” she explained.

'In Mexico we get together for everything and we party for any occasion in people’s backyards or in streets.'

“I always remember just setting up goals at every party and trying to get people together to play and I think growing up was all about sports and family for me.”

There are pivotal moments in any player’s life and for Pamela Tajonar, it was the women’s World Cup in 1999, which was won by the hosts, United States.

It showed the 15-year-old football-mad girl watching that tournament back home in Mexico that becoming a professional footballer was not just an unattainable dream. It was tangible, and it was attainable, and from that moment on, Tajonar’s focus was on making it her reality. Very quickly, her ability began to shine through.

“I started playing more seriously and that’s when I got a call-up for the Under-17 national team in their Under-17 side,” she explained. “I started going to the national team camps and I was missing school throughout that whole year, and that’s when I started to think about doing this for life.

“I went to college and played football there but the biggest decision was when I got the chance to go and play in Spain in 2011.

“I was in my fourth year of my architecture degree when I got a call to play for Malaga. That decision was crucial because if I said no, then I don’t think I would be here at Celtic.”
