The full Celtic squad is reassembling this week, with the players away on international duty reporting back to Lennoxtown as preparations step up for this weekend’s Premiership clash with Motherwell at Fir Park.

And there were mixed fortunes in the World Cup qualifiers for the Celts representing their respective countries.

Callum McGregor came off the bench on Tuesday night to help Scotland beat Faroe Islands 1-0 courtesy of a late Lyndon Dykes goal.

The win followed another last-gasp victory for Scotland at the weekend, when McGregor was at the heart of a Scottish midfield that beat Israel 3-2 at Hampden despite twice trailing in the match.

That game saw Nir Bitton play at the heart of the Israel, while Liel Abada was an unused substitute, as was David Turnbull for Scotland.

Israel had a better result on Tuesday, beating Moldova 2-1 at home. Bitton again played the full game while Abada came on for the last 15 minutes.

Kyogo Furuhashi and Tom Rogic faced each other in a vital World Cup qualifier at the Saitama Stadium.

The Japanese striker came on for the last half-hour, while the Australian played for just over 80 minutes, and it was Japan who were celebrating after Kyogo’s pressure on the Australian defence forced defender, Aziz Behich to put the ball into his own net with four minutes remaining to give Japan a 2-1 win.

It was an important victory for Japan following their 1-0 defeat away to Saudi Arabia at the weekend, while Australia beat Oman 3-1.

Albian Ajeti, Conor Hazard and Carl Starfelt were not called into action for their respective countries in either of the two World Cup qualifiers.

But both Stephen Welsh and Adam Montgomery were in the starting XI for the Scotland Under-21 side’s European Championship qualifier against Denmark at Tynecastle, a match that the Danes won 1-0.
