OUR BHOYS BEAT OUR BOYS

Despite being played in a torrential rainstorm with little or no cover, this game on November 8, 1890 attracted Our Boys’ biggest ever crowd at West Craigie Park as 6,000 took in Celtic’s 3-1 Scottish Cup fourth-round win. Celtic had beaten Rangers, Carfin Shamrock (after a replay) and Wishaw Thistle (another one-time only opponent) to get to this stage, but surprisingly the home side took the lead. However, a goal from Johnny Coleman and a double from Barney Crossan gave Celtic a 3-1 lead and that is the way the game ended. Although Our Boys had previously played future league members, as this was the inaugural season of the newly-formed Scottish League this was technically the first and only time that Our Boys ever played a league team.

THE ROAD AND THE MILES TO DUNDEE

There were many ‘Our Boys’ teams dotted throughout Scotland including one in Glasgow vying for the support in the city with the many other fledgling teams founded in the burgeoning years of the newly-popular sport. The Our Boys we are concerned with operated in Dundee from 1877 until 1893 when they dissolved and merged with Dundee East End to form Dundee FC. The new club retained Our Boys’ dark blue colours and their West Craigie Park base before moving to Carolina Port and then Dens Park – both visited by Celtic in the many times the Celts have played Dundee since then. Dundee’s biggest crowd at Carolina port was 8,000 for a 4-1 defeat by Celtic the first time the clubs ever met on August 19, 1893.
