She said: “I love the fact that they’ve asked me. You know, Bertie’s gone this year and we had some nice times at the Lisbon Lions event with Bertie, and I think the song – ‘Auld Lang Syne’ – is really fitting. And it’s a beautiful song.

“Singing this song is emotional anyway. The fact that it’s Scottish and it’s part of my heritage, and to say goodbye to people and to say that we’re still there in spirit, no matter how far away we’ve gone or how far apart we’ve been, we’re all together now – I love that thing about that song.

'At the Lisbon Lions event, Bertie was just in our company the whole time and making us laugh, making my Mammy laugh, and my mother-in-law. He just made me laugh so much!'

“It’s years and years and years of having that around us – the songs. Probably the first words that I was ever taught were ‘Celtic, Celtic!’ – never mind saying Mammy or Daddy. So I’ve got a real affection for Celtic. It reminds me of home, always."

Songwriter and producer, John McLaughlin has been part of many of the club's Christmas films over the years. This year the Celtic fan got the call to be involved again, helping produce the music behind it.

And just like Eddi, he was extremely proud to be asked and to get the chance to pay tribute to Bertie in such a special way.

John, who also fronts the band, Johnny Mac and the Faithful, said: “For Celtic to come to me again was just great.

“I’ve been such a big fan of Eddi Reader for many a moon and the song just sounds so beautiful. Her voice is just incredible on it.

'I think everyone will be crying when they hear it, but also so happy when they hear it. I’m just so proud to be a part of it.'

“I’m so sad about Bertie, as I got to know him over the years. The first record I did with Celtic was in celebration of the Lisbon Lions, where we had them all in the video – it was such a riot!

“I was so nervous because it’s your heroes you're meeting, but when we turned up and saw all the carry-on with Bertie and the boys, it was amazing.

“He’s a hero and a wonderful man. A legend as a footballer player, but more importantly a beautiful soul and we will miss him.”
