Celtic FC Women came back from 1-0 down in Sunday’s SWPL Cup semi-final at Forthbank Stadium to beat current holders Hibernian – claiming their place in the final.

A delighted Fran Alonso said the Ghirls deserve to be in the final, where they will face Glasgow City at Firhill on December 5.

The manager said. “We are one step away from our first trophy together. We played against the current champions, and we knew it was going to be a very tough game where the little details will define the game.”

Hibernian took the lead after 12 minutes through Rachael Boyle’s first-time hit from distance, and the Edinburgh side managed to hold on to that lead until the break.

Alonso said he recounted to his team at half-time the times this had happened to them in the past and they had come out fighting to win the game.

“I said we just need one goal, I know there’s extra time and penalties. I know the longer the game goes on, I consider our team the fittest in the league, so I’m never scared of the last minutes of the games.” he said.

“We just needed a goal and we managed to go out there and get two. In the first-half they got the best from the game, won more of the second balls and were a little bit more aggressive than us. But in the second-half we did.

“I’m very proud of the girls and the shift they put in.”

After beating Rangers in the quarter-finals, followed by a win over Hibs in the semi-finals with goals from Jacynta and Charlie Wellings, the Spaniard added that these results show why the squad deserve a spot in the cup final.

While the focus has shifted to their match against Aberdeen in the league next weekend, the manager said the side will then prepare properly for “an event that is unique.”

He added: “Glasgow City are used to winning competitions every year. For us it’s something new so hopefully we can start to win.

‘We will give our very best to try to please our fans. You saw them after this match and it’s a delight.’

“Everyone was waiting here to take pictures with the girls. I love, that it’s one of my favourite parts of the game.”
