From Hungary to Sweden via Berwick… it’s been a very busy week but also a very positive one for Celtic B team goalkeeper, Tobi Oluwayemi!

The 18-year-old travelled to Hungary for the first team’s Europa League match against Ferencvaros on Thursday night, and was named on the bench, while he was also called up to the England Under-19 squad for a series of Euro qualifiers later this month.

But before meeting up with the international squad, who will be travelling to Sweden to play the host nation, Andorra and Switzerland, Oluwayemi will back in action with the B team this weekend when they take on Berwick Rangers in the Lowland League.

And B team coach, Darren O’Dea explained that everyone is delighted for the goalkeeper. Speaking to the official Celtic website, he said: “We’re going to miss him for a couple of games but that’s a success.

'We thought he would be involved with the U19s team and then the added surprise of being involved with the first team is fantastic. It’s why we’re here, it’s why he’s here.'

“Towards the back end of last season, I worked with him in the U18s and he really has taken giant leaps forward and that’s credit to the staff here, Colin Meldrum in particular, because he works with him every day and pushes him every day.”

Celtic face an away trip this Saturday to take on Berwick Rangers (KO: 3pm), and O’Dea explained that the preparations remain the same.

“Our job here is to get players performing in a style that befits the first team,” he said. “So, our style and our emphasis will be on what we do tomorrow rather than what the opposition do.

“And I’ve said before, we’ll always give respect and attention to the opposition, but the way we approach the game will be pretty consistent, always.”

And the Celtic B team coach said this sort of travel is a good experience for the young Hoops, replicating what it’s like when the first-team travel.

“It’s about learning how to travel and how to prepare, the timings of when you eat, when you drink,” he said. “We’re in control of a lot of that so we’ll eat together as a team as we always do.

“But these players will be well used to away games. It’s part of the development but it’s not something that’s new to them.”
