All good things come to an end, and so it was that Scott Brown finally brought the curtain down on an incredible 14-year with Celtic against the club where he started his professional career.

The match at Easter Road between Celtic and Hibernian might have finished goalless, with the fixture also bringing to an end the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership season, but its significance was always going to be in relation to the Celtic captain.

It was his 620th appearance for the club, an impressive statistic in itself, with Brown one of only seven players in the history of the club to have played over 600 times for Celtic.

He leaves the Hoops to join Aberdeen as player/coach, having amassed 22 trophies over the past 14 years – 10 league titles, six Scottish Cups and six League Cups – and while he wasn’t able to add to his 46 goals today (Saturday), he was able to reflect on a poignant day in his career.

Speaking at Easter Road after the game, Scott Brown said: “It’s sad that I’m leaving and it’s sad that there are no fans here that I can say goodbye to because they’ve been a huge part of my life and my career for the last 14 years. Even the Hibs fans, when I was here before, have been fantastic with me whenever I meet them.

This week has been an emotional one both for Brown as he bids farewell to a club that he has been an integral part of since joining from Hibernian back in 2007, and also for the club as they have paid tribute to someone who has established himself as a Celtic legend.

Wednesday night’s 4-0 win over St Johnstone was the 35-year-old’s last appearance as a Celt at Paradise, while Easter Road saw him take his final bow. Ironically, it was a Celtic versus Hibernian fixture at the same venue back in May 2007 which was his final appearance for the Edinburgh side before he moved to Glasgow.

“It’s helped that we’ve had two games,” Brown admitted, “so it’s focused my mind on making sure I was ready and physically in good condition for the games, and I enjoyed today.

“We played really well and we were just a little bit unlucky and we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

“But it was really nice to finish my Celtic career where it pretty much started. My last game for Hibs was against Celtic, so that was a nice touch, but it’s just a pity I couldn’t score a diving header similar to the one I scored in my last game for Hibs.”

There was one effort in the second half from the Celtic captain, a shot from long-range that failed to hit the target.

'The lads said to me before the game – you’ve got to have a shot – so that was my one attempt that I’ve had.'

“I played the 90 minutes today, and I played 60-odd minutes on Wednesday, so it shows you that I’ve still got the energy in the tank. I love playing football. It’s something I really enjoy. Coming into Lennoxtown for training, I always do it with a smile on my face.”

Now, Scott Brown is swapping the green and white Hoops of Celtic for the red of Aberdeen, but what he has achieved for the Hoops over the past 14 years has ensured his place amongst the legends of the club.
