Having already won two of Celtic’s annual awards – the Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year Awards – David Turnbull has now added the PFA Scotland Young Player of the year Award to his personal collection for the 2020/21 season.

The 21-year-old midfielder, who joined the Hoops from Motherwell last August, has made 34 appearances for Celtic, scoring nine goals.

And while, understandably, he shares the squad’s disappointment with the overall campaign, he’s still pleased with how his first season at Celtic has gone.

“Obviously, with the amount of great players that are in the league, and the great young players who were nominated for this award, I’m delighted to win it.

'The players voting for you is what all players would like to hear. Playing against them, they see what I’ve contributed this season, and for everyone who voted for me, I can’t thank them enough.'

“It’s been a tough season, as everybody knows, but personally, winning these awards is a great feeling and gives you that extra confidence going into next season knowing that you’ve done so well and trying to do more for the team and pick up more individual awards.”

Turnbull was previously nominated for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year Award while at Motherwell, and that talent and potential first seen at Fir Park is continuing to grow and develop at Paradise.

“Ever since I’ve started playing I’ve had the confidence in myself, every week to go and put my mark in games,” he said. “Motherwell I was nominated for these awards and to go and do it this year is a great feeling.

“Winning the Scottish Cup definitely gives you a taste. Winning that back in December, that’s why I joined a big club like Celtic.

'You want to try and challenge for these trophies and titles, and I look forward to doing that even more next season.'

On the immediate horizon for David Turnbull is the imminent announcement of Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for the forthcoming Euros. It’s something that the Celtic midfielder would clearly love to be part of.

“That will be announced soon and I’m looking forward to seeing what my chances are,” he said, “but whatever happens, you need to respect the manager’s decision and my fingers are crossed.

“It’s a dream for every young boy growing up, what a big opportunity it is to play for your country, and to be able to go and do that would be amazing for me and my family.”
