From Henrik Larsson to Johan Mjallby, John Guidetti and Mikael Lustig to name but a few, Celtic’s lineage of top Swedish stars spans generations. Carl Starfelt is the latest to join that list and while keen to follow in his countrymen’s footsteps, the defender is determined to follow his own path at Paradise.

Now that he has arrived in Glasgow, the 26-year-old is raring to go and is determined to make his mark in green and white, and after training with his new teammates at Lennoxtown, he’s available for selection for tomorrow night’s encounter with Hearts at Tynecastle.

“There have been a lot of successful Swedes here,” said Starfelt. “I don’t think too much about it, but I want to be successful here as well.

“I haven’t spoken to Mikael Lustig too much about the move, but I want to do as good as I can here and I’m fully focused on myself and to succeed at this club.”

Starfelt described his time in quarantine as frustrating but said his downtime has fuelled his desire to perform. And once he does take to the pitch for the first time, Starfelt is confident in the team’s ability to share collective leadership in their pursuit of success.

He added: “Of course, you have to pay respect to the quarantine rules, they’re there for a reason, but the situation was frustrating as well.

'The coach decides who will play but if he wants me to play, I will. I feel ready. If I’m chosen to play, I’m confident in my abilities and that I can do it well.'

“Everyone on the pitch has to lead and to try and be a leader. It’s not only me, it’s not only the experienced guys, and everyone has to play their role. I have to take responsibility that I contribute well and do so in my own way. I’m confident that I can do that.”
