Callum McGregor is honoured to have been named the new Celtic club captain. And having learned from one of the best in Scott Brown, he’s now aiming to put his own mark on the role within the Celtic dressing room.

The 28-year-old midfielder is a Celtic Youth Academy success story, having come through the ranks at the club and established himself as a first-team regular.

With 326 appearances under his belt, and 12 trophies already won, McGregor is aiming to add further to both tallies in the seasons ahead.

Speaking to the official Celtic website, the new club captain said: “It’s a very proud day for myself, my family, everyone connected with myself so, first of all, I just want to say thanks to the manager for that. It’s a huge honour and I can’t wait to get to work and build something here.

“Scott was hugely successful as club captain here. I’ve had the honour to work closely beside him, to see how he operates every day, the way that he drives the changing room, the way that he drives the club.

“For me, I’ve had no better education in that sense, so I just want to follow that as closely as I can, and obviously you have to put your own personality and stamp on it.

'Ultimately it’s a new era for the club and I’m just desperate to get to work and make it a successful one.'

The first competitive game of that new era takes place tonight (Tuesday) when Celtic take on Danish side, FC Midtjylland, in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are aiming to get a positive result to take to Denmark for the second leg next week, while Callum McGregor is hoping to get his captaincy off to a winning start.

“Everyone’s in good spirits, the boys trained well today and there was a real intensity about the session,” he said. “

“We know how important these games are, they set you up for the season, everybody’s in a good frame of mind, we’re confident and ready to go.”
