Ahead of tomorrow night’s UEFA Champions League second qualifying round second leg against FC Midtjylland in Denmark, Callum McGregor said that the Celtic squad is prepared mentally and physically to get the tie over the line.

The Hoops go into the match tied 1-1 on aggregate though, thankfully,r the away goal rule no longer applies in this year’s competition. And, having created a number of chances in last week’s game at Paradise, the Celtic captain is confident he and his team-mates can get the job done on Wednesday.

“We created numerous chances and our performance during the game warranted a victory,” said McGregor. “That gives you good confidence in the back of your head that if you perform, if you create good chances on the night, and take them, then you can go through. That’s the mindset from the players.”

The 28-year-old acknowledged that the club is in the midst of a transition period, on and off the park, but he also emphasised that the players' sole focus is trying to win every game they play in, and doing so by playing attractive, attacking football.

He added: “As a Celtic player, and having been a Celtic player for so long now, I think being successful domestically and playing in Europe go hand-in-hand.

'At Celtic, regardless of transition periods or not, you have to win and you have to win well.'

“That expectation is never going to change. I get that people are saying it’s transitional and everything else. They might be giving us a bit of leeway, but if we have that mentality in the group, we won’t achieve anything.

“Yes, it’s new players, yes, there’s a new manager, a new chief executive, it’s a different feel for the club, but very quickly you have to get into that winning groove and that’s why we’re here as footballers – to win matches and to be as successful for the club as we possibly can for the club. If we don’t have belief in ourselves, then we’re never going to do it.

"The expectation is always there, every single match, regardless of who you’re playing, you’re expected to win and to win well. That’s never going to change and if anything thinks that’s going to be different, then they’re in for a bit of a shock.

"For guys like myself, the more experienced guys, we very quickly have to drum that into the heads of the new guys that, at Celtic, you have to win and that’s the way it is."
