For the new Celtic manager, it’s all about getting his team prepared and ready for the challenges ahead, which will begin with the first competitive match of the season – a UEFA Champions League qualifier against FC Midtjylland on July 20.

Speaking to Celtic TV at the club’s training centre in Lennoxtown, Ange Postecoglou said: “It almost feels like I’m living here at the moment, which is not a bad thing because I enjoy working with the players and the group of staff and getting to know everyone.

“From my perspective, you can gain the match fitness you need playing our football. Everything is connected and I’m confident the players will understand me fairly quickly. It’s not like we’re doing isolated fitness work, everything is based around our football.

“Every day the players are getting more of an understanding of the fundamentals that are going to be in our game.

“I’m hoping they enjoy it, not just because it’s something new, but because it’s based around something they love and that’s playing football. Hopefully their enjoyment comes from understanding that they’re learning and improving as they go along.

“When a new manager comes in they’re always going to be a little bit more alert but they’ll settle down and will be focused on the football rather than me.

“How they adapt depends on the footballers and what they’re like as people. People who want a challenge and want to continue to evolve and grow is what’s important. For me, the most important thing is that the players are open-minded, ambitious and want to improve every day and they’ll fit in well to what I’m trying to do.”

As for the warm weather, it might not have been what he had been forewarned about, but it’s been welcome nevertheless.

“I’ve had the sunscreen out just about every day, which I wasn’t planning on doing!” the Celtic manager said: “The weather here seems to be a favourite topic in Scotland but it’s fair to say I didn’t come to Glasgow for the weather.

“I came for other reasons that are much more important to me but I’ve enjoyed the setting here. It’s a great place to come into every day and I can’t wipe the smile off my face when I come through the gates here.”
