First-half goals from Shane Duffy and James Forrest saw Celtic overcome St Mirren 2-1 in their last Scottish Premiership encounter back in September last year. Despite pressing for a third in the second period, the Buddies held firm – a trait which impressed Hoops defender Kris Ajer.

As Neil Lennon’s men prepare to play host to the Saints tomorrow (Saturday), the Norwegian expects a similarly resolute performance from Jim Goodwin’s side, but is confident the togetherness of Celtic’s squad will help them prevail at Paradise.

“I’ve been really impressed with a lot of Scottish teams this season,” said Ajer in an exclusive interview with the official match programme. “Everyone is set up in a really strong way and the managers in the league are doing a great job.

“St Mirren are one of the teams I’ve been really impressed by. They have a good structure, they press hard and make it difficult for us. They’re a team I respect a lot and a team who I know will come to Celtic Park looking for points.”

Since Celtic last met St Mirren, the club has endured its share of highs and lows. Ajer said those lows have only served to strengthen the already strong bond between the players, and explained that the squad were determined to show what they are capable of in the upcoming games.

“We can’t deny there have been many disappointments so far this season,” the 22-year-old added. “Some periods of the season have felt like they’ve gone by very quickly because you’re in a bubble and only focusing on the football.

‘There’s always been a great togetherness in the group and that’s been more evident during the challenging times. We always stick together and we get through the positive and negative times together as a team.’

“There have been some periods that have felt really slow because of negative results. You always want to get back out playing after a negative result, and the time between games can seem like a long time when you’re focused on the build-up to a game.

“The team is looking back on form during training now so we’ll be aiming to show that in the game. Everyone is really putting in the work and we’re motivated to show that in the games."
