Celtic manager Neil Lennon recently named Scott Bain as his first-choice goalkeeper moving forward, and the 29-year-old is now looking forward to harnessing consistency in his performances.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night’s Scottish Premiership encounter with Kilmarnock, the Hoops stopper admitted results haven’t been good enough recently and said he and his team-mates are determined to find form game-by-game in the coming weeks.

“Since I’ve been here, every match has come with tremendous pressure regardless of which title we’re playing for,” said Bain. “Pressure is the norm here at Celtic. We’ve not been performing well enough on the pitch or up the standard we’ve set in recent years, we’ve not produced those levels from the last couple of years and it’s caught up with us a bit.

“I don’t know if I feel the pressure building personally, but we want to take it every game as we go – even if that means we start scraping wins.

Bain described his own experience of the season so far as a strange one, given the fact that he’s been in and out of the team, but said his application and attitude at Lennoxtown and on match day has remained the same.

Three years into his stay at Paradise, Bain is now the most experienced goalkeeper at the club which he said helps him when offering support and advice on the training pitch. From here, Bain’s targets are clear: to win games, retain his place and work hard for the fans and everyone associated with Celtic.

He said: “It’s the old cliché, but we want to play one game at a time. It’s more a case of we’re not performing well as a team.

'I wouldn’t say we’re not responding to the manager. Nothing has changed off the field, it’s more that we’re not performing on it.'

“Maybe there are players who are lacking a bit of confidence. That can come from not performing on the pitch and being out of the team. I think that can come from within and I think it can be dangerous to look to other people for recognition in what kind of player they are.

“Of course you can understand the anger from the fans. The fans have gotten used to a high level of success and for it to drop off the way it has, there’s nothing we can say to make it better, but if we can keep working hard, hopefully, we can make it up in one way. We’re feeling it as well.

“All we can do it try to put a run together and we need to keep going forward for each game as it comes. Our goal is to finish is high in the league as possible. We want to finish first, and we’ll keep going until that is no longer possible.”
