Neil Lennon was pleased with what he described as a good all-round performance from his players in Celtic’s 2-1 win against Motherwell at Paradise.

Stephen Welsh scored his first goal in the Hoops to give Celtic the lead inside two minutes and set the tone for much of the game. Celtic dominated Motherwell and were unfortunate not to have added to their led before the break given the number of chances created.

Odsonne Edouard doubled Celtic’s lead early in the second half and Celtic pressed ahead, determined to increase their lead.

A good defensive display from Celtic limited Motherwell’s chances but Allan Campbell managed to grab a goal for his side with just over 20 minutes remaining. Motherwell grew in confidence following the goal but Celtic continued pressure their opponents and managed to prevent Graham Alexander’s side from snatching anything from the game.

Neil Lennon said he was happy with how his team performed for the majority of the game but added they should have made things more comfortable for themselves.

“I thought we were outstanding for periods of the game,” he said. “We scored two good goals but should have had a lot more. Our play and energy were good. They got a slice of luck with the goal and, of course, that changed the psychology of the game a little bit.

“Our reaction was okay and their keeper made a great save from Tom. We always looked like we were pushing for a third.

'It was a very good win and a very good performance overall. For 60 or 70 minutes today, I thought we were outstanding.'

“We got a little bit anxious towards the end which is understandable. That goal gave some oxygen to Motherwell. I was disappointed that we didn’t get a third because we had plenty of opportunities to do that. Overall, it was a good all-round performance and a good three-points.”

Stephen Welsh was named Man of the Match for his performance and Neil Lennon credited the young defender for his commitment and work ethic.

“Stephen was strong and very calm,” said the Celtic manager. “That’s two very good performances from him. Welshy has been on the periphery of the squad for two or three years. He’s a great professional and he’s taken his chance very well so he deserves all the plaudits today. I thought Jonjoe had another fine game as well.”
