Celtic’s League Cup triumph at Hampden is the first trophy success under Ange Postecoglou, and came courtesy of two stunning strikes from Kyogo to beat Hibernian 2-1.

The Japanese striker was one of several players making their first cup final appearance for Celtic, which included some homegrown talent as well as the new signings who have arrived at the club this year.

For Callum McGregor, it was his 16th winner’s medal, and his first as Celtic captain, and he savoured that success as much as all of his previous achievements.

And while he, along with team-mate, James Forrest, are the benchmark for all young players coming through the Celtic Youth Academy, at the other end of that journey is 19-year-old Owen Moffat, who came off the bench at Hampden for only his second competitive appearance for the club and picked up the first winner’s medal of his career.

For the Celtic captain, the number of players in the squad who have come up through the ranks at Celtic is testimony to the work of the Youth Academy and an indication of its importance to the club.

Speaking after the final, the Hoops skipper said: “This club is built on young Scottish players and developing as many as we can, and we’ve got a really good crop coming through in terms of the first-team boys – the likes of Stephen Welsh, Tony Ralston, Mikey Johnston, Adam Montgomery and Owen Moffat.

'It’s brilliant for the Academy and shows that it works. So the foundation moving forward for this club will be the young players as well.'

McGregor, who made a goalscoring debut for Celtic back in July 2014, has now made 356 appearances for the club, and is a great example to any young Academy player.

And having taken over the armband and the responsibilities of the captaincy this season, following in the footsteps of some legendary figures in the club’s history, he’s delighted to be a winning Celtic captain.

“It means everything to me,” he said. “Just to be successful in the first place and to represent this club is important.

“I always speak about the fact you have to be successful at this club and that’s the pressure of playing at Celtic.

These are the moments I live for, that’s what I what, that’s gold dust for me, and to do it on Sunday was an amazing feeling.”
