Celtic’s road to trophy triumph in the SWPL Cup couldn’t have been tougher – a Glasgow derby against Rangers in the quarter-final, a clash with four-in-a-row cup holders, Hibernian, in the semi-final and then a meeting with Glasgow City, the dominant force in the Scottish women’s game over the past 15 years, in the final.

Yet, the Hoops successfully overcame every hurdle along the way, and lifted the trophy on Sunday after beating City 1-0 at Firhill, courtesy of a Caitlin Hayes goal.

For captain Kelly Clark, the trophy triumph was a reward for a lot of hard work over the past few years by everyone at the club, and it’s something that she felt was on the cards since even before the clash with Rangers, when the Hoops won 1-0.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the cup final triumph, the Celtic skipper said: “I don’t have words. I’ve been dreaming of this day for years but really from the night before we played Rangers I just had a feeling that this was going to happen and it’s come true. It feels absolutely amazing.

'I thought we were pretty dominant, especially in the first half, but even in the second half when City tried to put us under a bit of pressure, we could have scored a few more goals.'

“There were some good saves from Lee Alexander – one in the first half from a header from Charlie, and then we were through a couple of times in the second half – so it could have been more comfortable, but we fully deserved that result.

“It’s a massive reward for everything that we’ve put in over the past few years. We’ve been working towards being successful. Last year we got the Champions League and this year we’ve got silverware, so it’s another step on our so far excellent path.”
