Former Celtic FC Women's player, Christie Murray has shared some of her cup-winning wisdom ahead of Sunday’s SWPL Cup final between Celtic and Glasgow City.

The Scotland nationalist lifted the trophy with the Hoops back in 2010 - the only silverware the club has won to date.

And speaking to the official Celtic website ahead of the final at Firhill, Murray said: “Go out there and play with quality and heart. Leave everything on the pitch.

'Give everything and hopefully that can get them another title on the board. It’s a great opportunity to go and represent Celtic.'

Murray, who is currently playing in the English Super League with Birmingham City, scored twice in the 4-1 victory over Spartans back in May, 2010 when Celtic last won the trophy.

Recalling that occasion, she said: “I was only about 20 at the time. As a Celtic fan, to win that first trophy for Celtic was really special for me and my family. It’s one I still look back on really fondly.

“For the first goal, I cut in and hit it at the far post, but I don’t actually remember what the second one was. I just remember that we won quite convincingly. We had a lot of players that went on to play at Glasgow City and went on to play in the Champions League and win titles.

“We had a really good squad. It was just unfortunate that we couldn’t keep our better players in our own leagues instead of moving to other leagues.”

The midfielder has had stints with both of this year’s finalists, having played for Celtic between 2007-11 and then again in 2016, and Glasgow City from 2011-13 and then in 2018.

And she is expecting it to be Firhill for thrills in the SWPL Cup final.

“It’s a fresh start for Glasgow City who’ve got a new manager. Fran’s been in for a wee while now, the Ghirls have been picking up performances and points and they’ve been doing well in the league,” she added.

'The next step for Celtic is to continue to find ways to win in all the big games, against the likes of Glasgow City and push to get a Champions League spot again as well.'

"And having a couple of the Ghirls called up to the national squad has been great too.”

The Birmingham City player, who also has over 70 Scotland caps, has been in and around the women’s game in Scotland since she was a teenager and is seeing its vast improvement.

“It’s important that it continues to improve and that there’s backing from all the clubs," she said, "just in terms of the level of professionalism to attract more players to come back home to play.

“But obviously the girls at home are continuing to improve and are feeding into the national team. It’s great to see teams going full-time now but we want more to push to be that way and make it that competitive environment.”
