Scott Bain was full of praise for the high standards of goalkeeping coaching at Celtic and said the confidence gleaned from the training has helped ensure the team can play to their full potential.

The Hoops stopper reflected on the changes modern goalkeepers have had to make during an exclusive interview with Celtic TV in which he discussed the training regime Celtic’s goalkeeping coach Stevie Woods has established over the years.

“Goalkeeping has changed over the last few years,” said Bain. “There are a lot more aspects to it. You can see now throughout all the leagues that everyone wants to be able to play it out from the back, keep possession a lot more and have the goalkeeper join in with that.

'It’s no longer a game like it was when I first came into professional football where everyone squeezes up and you kick it up the pitch and hope for the best. It’s more focused on how we can use the goalkeeper to our advantage while we have the ball.'

“Our training week always starts with the team that we’re preparing for and we look at the patterns of play that they use. If it’s a team that puts a lot of balls in the box we’ll have a session focused on that. The first day will be more focused on getting your handling and focus right after a day or two off. From there, we’ll maybe do one-on-ones and reaction work.

"The manager likes us to join in the possession as well. It helps us get comfortable with the play, get the angles right and play through the lines. Then, on a Friday, we have what Woodsy likes to call a ‘Tidy Friday’ we’re he’ll make sure we’re sharp and flying so that when the game comes we’re feeling great.”
