It was a frustrating afternoon for Celtic as they relinquished hold of the Scottish Cup trophy they’ve won the past four seasons.

Two first-half goals from Rangers were enough to give the Ibrox side a 2-0 win and a place in the quarter-final of the competition, and while interim manager John Kennedy was disappointed with the result and large parts of the performance, particularly in the first-half, he was also frustrated that the chances Celtic did create were not converted.

There were some clear-cut opportunities for the Hoops in the second-half, including an Odsonne Edouard penalty after Leigh Griffiths had been fouled, but they were all squandered.

Speaking after the game, Kennedy said: “It’s something we’ve had an issue with and it’s down to confidence as well.

“I thought the way we played first half, we lacked a bit of belief both in terms of how we defended and pressed, and also how we moved the ball. We were too passive and were very tentative in terms of how we pressed, which had given us a lot of success in recent games, and even with the ball we were passive and passing the buck on at times.

“So we addressed some things at half-time in terms of having a bit more purpose to our play, being more aggressive and I thought we showed that. But when you concede two goals to go 2-0 down, it’s always difficult.

“We said at half-time that if we could get a goal, we could build a bit of momentum and then we could chase the game and go after it. The moments came but we weren’t clinical, we didn’t take them.

“We had a couple of chances in front of goal, we had the penalty and if you get to 2-1, then you’ve got a chance and you can really go for it.

“But we didn’t give ourselves that, unfortunately, so we’ve just got to take it on the chin and deal with it. It’s been a difficult one today. We're very disappointed with the result and large parts of the performance, but we still had those moments that could have change the game for us and we didn’t take them.”
