TODAY, September 21, marks World Alzheimer’s Day and Celtic FC Foundation, alongside Celtic Football Club, are proud to support this campaign that aims to raise awareness and highlight issues faced by people affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Alzhemier’s and Dementia are very close to our hearts and since 2018, thanks to funds raised from the #LionsLegacy initiative, Celtic FC Foundation has strived through its Lions’ Lunch Break projects to improve the quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life, with Alzheimer’s being the most common cause of dementia.

‘Lions’ Lunch Breaks Glasgow’, delivered weekly prior to Covid-19 by Celtic FC Foundation at Celtic Park and its Edinburgh-based counterpart, ‘Liddell Lions’ Lunch Breaks’, delivered weekly in the Eric Liddell Centre, provide accessible, holistic provision for those living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia and their carers.

Both projects operate on a simple, friendly and inclusive approach, prioritising responsive and engaging activities as well as a healthy dose of fun and laughter.

The Eric Liddell Centre is now one of the many charities to benefit from the Football for Good Fund - receiving a donation of £10,000.

This support has helped fund the ELC’s Lunch Delivery Programme, which delivers a healthy and wholesome lunch to the doors of vulnerable people, five days a week, Monday to Friday as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

John MacMillan, CEO at the Eric Liddell Centre, said: “The £10,000 donation from Celtic FC Foundation was the catalyst for our Lunch Delivery Programme – without this support, we would not have been able to take this much needed service to people who really need food during these difficult times.

“The Foundation’s backing has created a critical mass of support for vulnerable people that might not have happened otherwise.

“The Eric Liddell Centre is delighted to be able to work in partnership with Celtic FC Foundation – many thanks for your financial support and also for providing the encouragement, enthusiasm and leadership for us, so we can make a difference to many vulnerable people’s lives and circumstances. We’re in this together!”

Tony Hamilton, Chief Executive of Celtic FC Foundation, said: “A lot of our project delivery has been paused because of the situation we all find ourselves in.

“However, our work in various spaces, including dementia care, remains very important to us and we’re delighted that we can still assist people living with dementia in some way, while we’re all dealing with the pandemic.”
