It has been an incredible 10 days for Conor Hazard. Celtic’s Hampden penalty shoot-out hero only made his first-team debut on December 10, when he played against Lille in the Europa League.

His showing in the 3-2 win over the French side was enough to keep him in the side for last weekend’s league game over Kilmarnock, which saw the Irish goalkeeper keep a clean sheet in the 2-0 win.

And on Sunday, he found himself between the sticks for the Scottish Cup final against Hearts. And after a dramatic and thrilling 120 minutes at the National Stadium, which ended 3-3, the 22-year-old grabbed the headlines, saving two of Hearts’ spot-kicks before Kris Ajer slotted home the winning penalty. It delivered a fourth successive Scottish Cup success for the Hoops and, more importantly, sealed a Quadruple Treble.

Hazard, not surprisingly, was delighted with the way events panned out at Hampden. Speaking after the game, he said: “I don’t think it’s sunk it yet, and it’s been a crazy week-and-a-half now.

'Three weeks ago, I would never have pictured this moment, so I’m just trying to take it all in my stride and take each day as it comes.'

“In the course of the game, there were goals that we could have stopped but, at the end of the day, we’re just delighted with the result and the momentous occasion, and I’m delighted, absolutely delighted.”

Celtic established a 2-0 first-half lead courtesy of goals from Ryan Christie and Odsonne Edouard, before Hearts pegged them back in the second-half. Leigh Griffiths restored Celtic’s lead in extra-time before the Edinburgh side once again equalized, with Hazard annoyed at himself with his part in that goal. However, he more than made amends with his penalty shoot-out saves.

“It doesn’t go through your mind becoming a hero,” he said. “You just try to save each penalty as it comes, so I’m really delighted.

“There’s always a plan to try and make them go a certain way, and I’m just delighted it paid off. Woodsy (goalkeeping coach, Stevie Woods) and I worked on it really hard ahead of the game, and did a lot of work on it, so I couldn’t be happier.

'It was a crazy day for me, but I’m glad it worked out. You don’t want to know what was going through my head at that point (after third goal).'

“I was quite angry at the time but it was all about bouncing back and trying to get my composure back as quick as possible, which, thank God, I did.”

Next up for Celtic is a home game against Ross County this Wednesday night, and while Hazard would be delighted to keep his place in the starting XI, he’s taking nothing for granted.

“That’s up to the gaffer and Woodsy,” he said. “I’ll just come in to training every day and keep working hard, and see where that goes.”
