NEIL Lennon said he and the Celtic players must all shoulder the responsibility for their disappointing loss to Ferencvaros in the second round of Champions League qualifying.

Celtic’s ambitions of reaching the Group Stages of the Champions League were derailed after they suffered a 2-1 defeat against the Hungarian champions at Paradise.

The visitors took the lead through David Siger early in the first half and, despite creating numerous chances, Celtic went into half-time 1-0 down.

Ryan Christie drew Celtic level shortly after the restart and Olivier Ntcham saw his volley come back off the underside of the crossbar. Ferencvaros’ Tokmac Nguen punished Celtic with a quick break to restore his side’s lead and managed to hold out under intense pressure to win the tie.

Neil Lennon made clear his frustrations after the game and said everyone, including himself, was responsible for the loss.

“I'm devastated, it shouldn't happen,” said the manager. “It's a poor result. We dominated the game but we conceded two really poor goals.

“We all have to take responsibility for it, certainly I do for the team selection. We had more than enough chances to win the game twice over.

“It was really poor. For the first one, it was only Brown trying to get out. The second goal was an individual error that we should've dealt with comfortably.

“It's just a basic mistake. I'm sick of seeing us make basic defensive mistakes. We did the same against Copenhagen when we were on top. Sometimes you can't legislate for that. He's in the right position and all he has to do is deal with it but doesn't and we get punished for it.

“In the final third we should have been better because we had so many opportunities to score.”

Neil Lennon said he would analyse the reasons behind the poor performance and implement the necessary changes to ensure the remainder of the season was more positive.

“The players need to buckle up,” he said. “They’ve been okay but some of their attitudes have to be better. We have to analyse where we went wrong and make it a season to remember as we go on.”
