'The Story Of' is a web series dedicated to small but special tales from Celtic’s illustrious history. Here, Paul McStay gives his take on the current Celtic side’s phenomenal success.

ON the day when Paradise celebrated an eighth successive league title, and the team captain and No.8 lifted the trophy once again, it was fitting that another Celtic legend, who wore the same number, was guest of honour.

On Sunday May 19, 2019, Paul McStay met the team at the Celtic Way, ahead of the game against Hearts, before he and Scott Brown carried the trophy into the stadium. The Maestro was also part of the post-match presentation ceremony, bringing the trophy out on to the pitch before congratulating each of the Hoops players as they received their league winner’s medal.

Not surprisingly, the Maestro was given a rapturous reception by the Paradise faithful. After all, he is one of Celtic’s greatest ever players, and only the legendary Billy McNeill made more appearances for Glasgow’s green and white than McStay.

Speaking to Celtic TV on Trophy Day 2019, he said: “When you arrive at Celtic Park now, the whole environment is different class and once you get into the stadium, the atmosphere is special. It’s something that all Celtic fans have been known for over many years – creating that buzz about the place, as I always say! It’s a great place and a great environment to play football.

“The team has been fantastic over the past few years and eight in a row is some achievement. I think it’s great for the young fans that they know success and the fact that we’re going for a Treble Treble. All my kids have seen is Celtic lifting trophies, and I just hope it continues for many more years.

“It’s a great honour to do be part of this, but it’s all about the players and acknowledging what they’ve achieved this year, and in previous years as well.”
