ON this day one year ago, Celtic overcame Aberdeen 3-0 at Pittodrie to clinch their eighth consecutive league title – the first of two trophies they’d win in the month of May, 2019, and the second of three they’d clinch in last season’s domestic clean sweep.

Hoops full-back Mikael Lustig fired the Hoops in front with an acrobatic diving header five minutes from half-time, before Jozo Simunovic bagged his second of the season on 53 minutes, and Odsonne Edouard made it three on 88.

As fate would have it, the Swedish defender made his Celtic debut in Aberdeen in March 2012, so to score in his last title win before departing Paradise marked a fitting end to seven years in green in white. Lustig would of course play the remaining games of the Treble Treble trail, ultimately assisting French Eddy for the goal that made history at Hampden three weeks later.

“I’ll probably celebrate this title more now,” Lustig told the Celtic View after full-time at Pittodrie. “The first title was really special, but I think this one is even more special. It feels brilliant. I remember I made my Celtic debut here at Pittodrie a few years ago, so this was a special moment.

“We started quite well but then we let them in and, to be fair to Aberdeen, they had three or four really good chances, so the goal came at the perfect time. It was a great cross and a good header as well!

“It gets to near the end of the season and we’ve almost got our hands on the trophy but we knew we needed to get over the line. Everyone has worked really hard defensively and now we’re scoring goals as well, so it’s nice. It was all about our fans at Pittodrie and they gave everything for the full game, so hopefully they’re really happy too.”
