“I still talk with some of the guys and obviously I’m following every step that Celtic take. Scott’s a machine and he just keeps getting better. The thing with Broony is, if you see him in training every day, he’s always up there in every test, and he’s so fit. And he pushing 35 this year, but hopefully he can be there for another one or two years and be able to lift that 10-in-a-row!”

Lustig, now 33, has enjoyed a good first season in Belgian football with Gent, who are currently sitting second in the Belgian League, while they, like Celtic, reached the last 32 of the Europa League before being knocked out by Roma.

And back when the draw for the group stages of the competition were made, there was the chance that he could have been returning to Paradise had Celtic and Gent been drawn together.

“If you’re going to play against your team-mates, who’ve been your friends for the past eight years, it would just be crazy, and I don’t think you have any idea how you’re going to handle it," he admitted.

“Both Celtic and Gent won their groups, so we couldn’t get each other in the knockout, but before that, of course, we could have.

“You always want to come back to Celtic Park, but to be an opponent would be really strange. I remember that game when Henrik came back – he scored in the game and you could see on his face that it was a really strange feeling for him.

“I’ve got another two years at Gent and then we’ll see what happens, but when you start to get a little bit older, you just take it one season at a time. But at the moment, my body has been really good, and I haven’t been injured this season, so at the moment it feels good.”

And at some point in the future, when football is back up and running, Mikael Lustig is planning a trip to Paradise to cheer on the Hoops.

“I miss all of the fans so hopefully next year we can see each other again,” he said.
