IT was on this day 116 years ago, on April 16, 1904, that Celtic won the Scottish Cup for what was then the fourth time in the club’s history – the total currently stands at 39.

The Hampden victory over Rangers was a historic one as it represented Celtic’s first major honour wearing the green and white Hoops, which the team had started wearing from the beginning of the 1903/04 season.

And the 3-2 victory, with the Hoops coming back from two goals down, also saw a cup final hat trick from the legendary Jimmy Quinn. It’s a trophy triumph that is still well worth celebrating…

THE ROAD TO THE FINAL
Celtic kicked off their Scottish Cup campaign with an away game against St Bernard’s. A crowd of 5,000 saw the Celts, now wearing their green and white Hoops, win 4-0. There were doubles for Jimmy McMenemy and Willie Orr, to set up a quarter-final meeting with Dundee. It took three attempts to get beyond the Dens Park side. The first match was 1-1 draw at Celtic Park, while the replay in Dundee finished goal-less. The third match, played at Celtic Park, was a resounding 5-0 win for the Hoops, with McMenemy again grabbing a double, while Jimmy Quinn would also score one of the goals. In the semi-final, Quinn was again on the scoresheet at Celtic beat Third Lanark 2-1, with Bobby Muir also netting for the Hoops. That set up a final with Rangers at Hampden.

HAMPDEN ROAR
The first ever Scottish Cup final that Celtic wore the green and white Hoops proved to be a successful one as Willie Maley’s side lifted the famous old trophy for the fourth time in the club’s history. A crowd of 65,000 gathered at Hampden for the match, which saw the Hoops take on the cup holders. The Celtic side that day was: Adams, McLeod, Orr, Young, Loney, Hay, Muir, McMenemy, Quinn, Somers, Hamilton. But it was Rangers who raced into a two-goal lead. They scored their first goal on 10 minutes following a mistake from Celtic goalkeeper, Davie Adams, and just 60 seconds later, they netted a second goal from a corner, both goals being scored by Findlay Speedie. It was a disastrous start to the match for Celtic, whose supporters could hardly believe what they had seen. What was to follow was even more incredible…

TREBLE YELL
Celtic reduced the deficit on 37 minutes, and it was Jimmy Quinn who scored the goal. A brilliant individual effort it was too, with the Hoops striker showing great skill and strength who drive through the Rangers defence and fire home an unstoppable shot. And having dragged themselves back into the game, Celtic duly grabbed an equaliser before the break. Bobby Muir showed some great trickery on the right wing before swinging in a cross for Quinn to fire home. Half-time in a remarkable final was 2-2. And in a fiercely contested second-half, the deciding goal of the game came with just 10 minutes of the match remaining. Quinn latched on to a pass from Jimmy ‘Dun’ Hay and, despite several attempts to dispossess him by fair means or foul, he retained possession and slotted the ball beyond the Rangers keeper and into the back of the net. The legend of the Mighty Quinn had been born.

GOALSCORING GREAT
Jimmy Quinn is fifth in Celtic’s list of all-time goalscorers. He netted an incredible 217 goals in 331 games which included, of course, his famous hat-trick in the 1904 Scottish Cup final. He joined the club in 1900 and made his debut for the club on January 19, 1901 when he scored in a 4-3 victory away to St Mirren. And his last goal for Celtic came on Boxing Day in a 3-1 win over Hamilton, when 6,000 fans saw Quinn hit a low drive into the back of the net.
