CELTIC’s new women’s Head Coach, Fran Alonso, said he will look to implement attractive, attacking football as a means of building on the success of the women’s team and bring silverware to Paradise.

The Spanish coach was appointed Head Coach on Tuesday (January 14), following the announcement that the women's first-team now had a new professional status.

Speaking to the media at Celtic Park today (Thursday) Alonso said it was an easy decision to join Celtic when the position became available.

“It’s a huge club, one of the oldest and best in the world,” he said. “In my past experience in the Premier League when I was at Southampton, there were some players who came from here. They all talked highly about Celtic, and when Celtic call you, you cannot say no.”

Alonso brings with him a wealth of experience, having worked as Ronald Koeman’s first-team assistant at Everton and Mauricio Pochettino’s technical coach at Southampton. Most recently, he was in charge of Lewes FC Women in England where he led the club in the FA Women’s Championship.

“I have a lot of experience in the professional game and I’ve learned from some of the best managers in Europe,” he said. “I will try to apply these learnings and put them into the team.

“Success can be measured in different ways. At a club like Celtic that’s trophies and make the amazing fanbase happy we’ll try to do that as soon as possible. It’s a period of transition and an exciting time now for the club, with players going full-time. We will try our best to attain success as soon as possible.

“The players have a lot of quality and good habits from last year. We will try not to lose that but we will make changes in terms of playing style. We will try to not only be successful but play attractive, attacking football because it’s really important that fans engage with the women’s team.”
