CELTIC head into a new year and a new decade in confident mood, having dominated the previous 10 years, with 18 trophies garnered in that period, including this season’s League Cup.

To try and pick just 10 games to highlight from the decade just past is a near impossible task, but that’s exactly what we’ve tried to do in this week’s Celtic View, along with our colleagues at Celtic TV.

And even if you don’t agree with our selection, it’s bound to start a good Celtic debate amongst friends and family.

Here are just three of the games from the 10 chosen.

Celtic 2-1 Barcelona

November 7, 2012

Just 24 hours after Celtic celebrated the 125th anniversary of their founding, Neil Lennon’s side recorded one of their greatest ever European results as they defeated Barcelona 2-1 at Paradise in a Champions League group-stage game. At that time, the Catalan giants were considered to be the best club side in the world, and Celtic’s victory on the night reverberated throughout the football world. Victor Wanyama headed the Hoops into the lead on 21 minutes, and that remained the scoreline thanks in no small part to the heroics of Fraser Forster between the sticks. Then, with just seven minutes remaining, Celtic doubled their lead. A long clearance from Forster was misjudged by Xavi and found its way to teenage striker, Tony Watt, who raced in on goal and fired the ball into the back of the next, sending Paradise into raptures. Despite a later Lionel Messi goal, the Hoops held on for a stunning victory.

Celtic 5-1 Rangers

Scottish Premiership

The first Glasgow derby of the 2016/17 season was also the first experience of the fixture for Brendan Rodgers, who had taken over as Celtic manager in May that year. And it proved to be a stunning introduction for the Irishman as his side demolished Rangers 5-1. Moussa Dembele proved to be the goalscoring hero of the afternoon, netting the perfect hat-trick. His first came from a powerful header on 33 minutes before he scored again just before the break with a superb finish with the outside of his right-foot. In the second-half, Scott Sinclair extended Celtic’s lead before Dembele completed his treble with a left-foot shot on 83 minutes. Stuart Armstrong completed the scoring in the last minute for a 5-1 rout as the Hoops laid down a marker for the season in emphatic style.

Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen

Scottish Cup final

The last game of the 2016/17 season saw Celtic on the verge of football history. Victory over Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden would see the Hoops secure the domestic treble as Invincibles – going through the whole campaign unbeaten across all three competitions. It would prove to be the most dramatic of afternoons for Celtic. Jonny Hayes gave Aberdeen the lead after nine minutes with what would prove to be his last goal for the club – he joined the Hoops the following month – but that was cancelled out two minutes later by Stuart Armstrong’s strike from just outside the box. The game remained tied at 1-1 until added time at the end of the match when substitute Tom Rogic made a dramatic intervention. The Australian picked up the ball in the middle of the Aberdeen half and drove towards goal. Waltzing past several defenders, he steered the ball into the net with his right foot from a tight angle to give Celtic a 2-1 win, secure the Treble and ensure the team ended the season as Invincibles. It was, and still remains, a spine-tingling moment of Celtic history.
